It began when skype 4.2 stopped showing time stamps in my IM windows. this bothered me greatly. After playing with settings which had no effect, I decided to upgrade to skype 5.0 and download the jaws scripts for it. I did this, and since I use XP, and I run primarily off a limited user account for security's sake, I believe what I did was make a copy of the jaws enu folder and copy that to all users, and the limited user account so I would have all the scripts in both places.
Now, when I load jaws, it throws up an error about not being able to load the braille driver. It also says, "unknown function called to skypestart."
Freaking out, I deleted all the scripts having to do with skype from all the enu folders for all of the users. No change. I then uninstalled skype5, reinstalled skype 4.1, which, by the way, doesn't show time stamps like skype5 did, and reinstalled the jaws scripts for skype version 4.
I still have the braille and skypestart errors. Also, I had to do a repair of jaws, because my auto forms mode, and mannual forms mode, neither would work. My jaws now says "Hour glass" "arrow" and "start ap" when I'm running and navigating programs. It also says eye beam, whatever that is. It also doesn't like reading edit fields like notepad, or scrolling up through VIP.
I also have seen the jaws tracking engine come up, which I read happens if you have magic installed. I don't have magic, so I don't know why it's doing that.
My conclusion? I've broken jaws completely.
According to jaws, I have 2 upgrades remaining on this key. My question is, if I completely uninstall jaws 11, and all components, and upgrade to jaws 12, I have the key, I think, copied to a file on my computer.
A, will it fix the problem?
B, will the key work?
C, what the hell happened to my jaws!
PS, If anyone is looking to higher a compitent computer messer-upper, I'm available.
sorry I can't answer a lot of your questions, but for the eyebeam, hourglass and arrow, there's a checkbox somewhere for, "Notify when cursor changes shapes." Somehow, this box has become checked. Find and uncheck it to stop this behavior. sorry I can't tell you where it is. i'm using jaws 10, and the configuration dialogs are totally different between the versions. They've totally redesigned it.
I think I might just have to ask you to marry me and bear my children. lol.
I'm still having issues with, as I'm arrowing through the start menu, jaws is speaking the little messages after each program such as, "Allows you to talk..." bla bla bla. I've got it set on advanced verbosity, I thought I had all the access keys and tutor messages off, anything that looks rellivent.
Thanks for helping me fix that bit of annoyance.
So far, these are the only two real issues going on.
if I hold down the arrow or backspace keys, jaws won't move through the text like it normally does. It just sits there, so I have to keep pressing the arrow or delete keys.
Also, it won't read edit fields, or the entry or output windows for VIP mud. It also doesn't like reading MSN messages.
You might want to find the box for key repeat and check it so the keys will repeat when you hold them down. Hope this helps.
If you have upgrades install 12. You don't have to remove 11, because 12 will install all features on the beginners settings, then you can start over messing up. Smile. Seriously Jaws 12 is much easier to set up due to a feature called settings center. Read about it on the Freedom website.
Also when installing programs always install them as admin. All users can use any program installed by an admin they just can't install programs, so all that fancy work was over kill. Keep the 2 accounts, but when installing use the admin. Also last if you are the only person using your computer and you are using XP you don't need to protect yourself from installing things? I mean you are the boss right, so if you don't sleep walk you are going to sign on to the admin account anyway when ever you want to install, so what is the purpose? Smile.
Thanks for all the info.
I finally did a jaws repair, and it seems to have fixed it. The user account is still broken, but the admin is fine. I think I'll just copy my files off the limited user, delete it, and recreate another one if I feel like it.
I am the only one using the computer, but even though I'm careful, and fairly smart when it comes to malware, I dont want to have to reformat this desktop again. I figured it was safer/more secure to run as a limited user. But it's really a pain in the ass, so maybe I'll just leave myself as an admin.
if you're careful reformatting shouldn't be an issue for you. good anti-virus, a couple anti-spyware and you should be ok for the most part. just watch what you download, scan any files you get and all should stay well
Even if you happen to run out of keys for your Jaws, you can always call freedom scientific sales and they'll reset it for you. They're very good about doing that with little to no hassle. At least, for me. I've called to have my keys reset 2 or 3 times and haven't gotten any suspicious peerings or grumblings about me using the program illegally. Quite frankly, I would recommend a fresh start with jaws. Uninstall your version, and just reinstall everything from scratch. It doesn't sound like you need a complete computer reformat, just a complete Jaws reinstall. Also, the scripts for skype might be outdated. Jaws 12 however, works just fine with skype 4.1, so you should be able to see your time stamps. I'm using windows 7 64 byt operating system with Jaws 12 and it works just fine for me. Time stamps and everything. without needing to install a single third party script.
I agree about the keys, but she was speaking of her key in relation to upgrating from 11 to 12. I really thing having to accounts if you are the only user is more a pain in the ass then it's worth. Rat is correct on that score. If you get good protection you will get warned if you happen to be sleep walking, so no sweat. The better ones even offer tech support to help, or clean up the infection if you should ever get one for free. So to completely delete the other account you'll hae to go under my computer, but if it's not troubling you never mind. Forget all that file copying. Admins have access to everything anyway.
